Special Requirements
A single faecal specimen is adequate to diagnoses infection with Salmonella, Shigella or Campylobacter.
Patient Preparation
Provide patient with instruction sheet and labeled specimen container(s). If M&C is requested, a single specimen in a brown top faeces container is required. For faecal parasite investigation, see faeces ova, cysts and parasites.
Clinical Information
Routine investigation is for Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Additional testing is dependant on the clinical notes provided. Yersinia culture : only if clinical notes indicate appendicitis, abdominal pain or inflammation of the intestinal lymph nodes . Full parasite examination: only if clinical notes indicate a history of travel from an endemic area (including Northern Australia), diarrhoea persisting for more than week, blood stained faeces, eosinophilia, immunocompromised patientEnteropathogenic E.coli: only if specifically requested.
